From Startup to Standout: GenTech Celebrates 20 Years of Service

April 25, 2025

GenTech is proud to be celebrating 20 years of delivering innovative solutions and common-sense consulting to our government clients. Rooted in what we call “blue jean wisdom,” we’ve grown from a one-person consultancy into a 200-strong firm by staying true to our core principles. This anniversary marks more than the passage of time — it reflects a journey shaped by purpose, driven by people, and inspired by our leadership’s vision to create a company where professional excellence and work-life balance go hand in hand.

The journey to 20 years has been marked by pivotal moments of growth and personal fulfillment for Scott Chaplin, our founder and President. Scott started GenTech with a clear goal: to achieve a better work-life balance while continuing his professional passion.

“I had been traveling 100% at my previous position for a couple of years and was missing my daughters growing up,” he recalls. “I wanted to start a company where work-life balance was as important as exceeding our customers’ needs. Establishing this culture at GenTech not only gave me the opportunity to meet my personal and professional goals but also enabled our 200-person-strong team to do the same thing, which has resulted in excellent employee and customer retention.”

Among the most significant milestones was the first time Scott received a steady paycheck. “Of all the memorable moments, I will never forget when I was able to draw a regular paycheck nearly a decade after starting GenTech,” he shares.

Another defining moment for GenTech came when Scott made the decision to hire his first overhead employee. Prior to this, he was handling all back-office functions himself — managing every aspect of the company’s operations. Bringing on that first key hire proved to be a game changer for GenTech. “It was a turning point,” Scott reflects. “Up until then, I was everything back office in addition to everything client-facing.”

This milestone marked the beginning of a larger shift in the company. With each subsequent hire, GenTech’s capacity to manage its growth expanded, allowing the company to maintain its rapid upward trajectory. These new team members played an instrumental role in helping the business sustain double- and triple-digit growth year after year, giving the company the momentum it needed to continue scaling.

What started as a boutique consultancy in 2005 has evolved into a 200-person professional services firm with a continued commitment to excellence in 2025, providing financial management consulting, independent audit, data analytics, and staffing solutions.

Looking forward, Scott is excited about the future of GenTech. “We have an amazing team and have positioned ourselves to continue to grow. It will be interesting to see what we look like in another 10, 20, and 30 years! We have weathered government shutdowns, recessions, and pandemics. I know we will weather more storms, but we have built a solid base that will help us through those as well.”

GenTech’s success would not be possible without the dedication of our team and Scott’s leadership. We are proud to be a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), an 8(a) Small Disadvantaged Business, and a licensed, peer-reviewed CPA firm serving both federal and civilian agencies. To name a few, we support the Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Justice, Department of the Interior, Department of Labor, Department of Homeland Security, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As we reflect on these 20 years of growth, innovation, and achievement, we look forward to continuing our mission: to help our clients tackle complex challenges and achieve their goals — while maintaining the work-life culture that defines our firm.

Here is to 20 years of success — and to many more years of partnership, excellence, and growth!

Auditing help: GenTech Associates President Scott Chaplin describes his company as a licensed CPA firm, “but more of a management consulting firm.” Most of its work is with government agencies—federal, state and local—helping them prepare for audits and then, once the audit is over, helping them recover from the audits. If auditors find internal controls aren’t working or there’s a process subject to potential fraud, GenTech helps the agencies re-engineer their business process or update their systems.

His story: Chaplin, a service-disabled Army veteran, was an accounting instructor at Fort Harrison. After leaving the military, he went on to hold several accounting positions before going out on his own in 2005-2006. For the first five to seven years of business, the company was a subcontractor getting its name out and gaining experience. Once it had that, it was able to move up and become a prime contractor.

Ready to succeed: Chaplin said that, in the last four years, GenTech set itself up for success. Participating in some U.S. Small Business Administration programs helped. GenTech also benefited, he said, when federal and state governments began to take the Service-Disabled Veteran Small Business program designation more seriously and set aside 3% of contracts for businesses in that category.

Veterans’ groups: Among the organizations GenTech has worked with are the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Marine Corps’ Technology Services Organization and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Chaplin said he’s particularly proud to have helped the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, whose mission is to recover missing personnel. “What we’re doing for them is accounting and accounting-system-type support, but we’re proud to be a part of that,” he said.

Strong future: In April and May, GenTech won three new contracts. “It goes in spurts,” Chaplin said, “but when we win one, our contracts are usually fairly sizable and they’re usually long in duration. Most contracts are four to five years. If you can be persistent and know how to put together the right combination of folks and tell the right story for the proposal, you can win.”•
